Periodic Maintenance

Here are the factory lubrication points located on the BMW R12. These are from the factory manual

  1. Transmission fill
  2. Motor oil
  3. Magneto
  4. Throttle grease fitting
  5. Rear drive fill
  6. Grease fittings

Motor Oil- The capacity of the motor is 3 ¾ pints, this is almost 2 quarts but not exact. So place 1 quart in and than do a half of another quart and continue to check until its correct on the dip stick. In the Handbook for the BMW R12 they mention Gargoyle Mobil Oel BB to be used in the motor. There was a summer weight and winter weight oil. This oil doesn’t exist anymore . You will get lots of different answers on oil but this is what we use what we suggest. For the motor you can use Vavoline Racing oil and they produced a straight 50 weight oil. This oil contains zinc and is good for older motors.

Fork oil- For the BMW R12 I recommend a 30 weight SAE oil. This can be a Penzoil straight 30 weight or you can use PJ products motorcycle fork oil part number  PJ2-30. It is a 30 weight fork oil of modern composition, with anti foaming agents. This works just as good as straight 30 weight motor oil. The forks each leg hold 120cc of oil. Its best to use a ration Rite when adding the fork oil to be 100% exact.

Rear Drive oil- The capacity of the rear drive oil is 125cc. It is suggested that you check the oil level every 600 miles. When filling oil make sure the level is below the bottom of the threads on the fill plug. The R12 hand book also suggest you change the oil every 10,000 miles. I personally would change this oil about every 1,000 miles.

Transmission oil-  The capacity of the transmission oil is____. It is suggested that you check the oil level every 600 miles. When filling oil make sure the level is below the bottom of the threads on the fill plug. We suggest using ____.

Spark plugs(Zündkerze) What plugs do you use in the BMW R12? I would suggest two different brands to use. First is the NGK B7HS plugs with gap 0,023in or 0,6mm. This is a good modern plug to use. Next would be the BOSCH W4AC with the same gap as the NGK B7HS. The original BMW R12 plug was a BOSCH W 240 T1 with 14mm threads.
